Also known locally Mumbai is the most important pert city of the subcontinent with about forty percent of the country's foreign traffic.
The name derives from the local goddess Mumbai Devi. Between 126.199.005 was officially called Bombay ( in hindi: मुंबई ), a traditional name whose use continues to recommed in spanish for the ASSOCIATION OF ACADEMIES OF THE SPANISH LANGUAGE.
It is the most populated city of india and the fourth most populated of the world, with a population of approximately 14.475.568 inhabitants.
The metropolitan region (which includes Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Virar, Vasai and Panvel) together with the neighboring urban areas of navi Mumbai and thane is the fourth largest in the world with a calculated population of 21.250.000 inhabitants.
The city is located on the west coast of the Indian subcontinent and has a natural harbor ore great depth. In 2009 it was classified as a global city it is also the richest city in south, west and Central Asia.
It is located on a narrow strip of land that rises from the marshy coast of Maharashtra and enters the Arabian Sea. The city is the main economic center of india and hosts the largest film industry in the World, being also a communications hub and important cultural center that has numerous universities, theaters, museums and galleries.
Numerous buildings of the old town of Bombay are built in a regional derivation of the historicist style. Two of the city's monuments, The Chhatrapali Shivaji Railway terminal and the temples of elephants cave, are parte of unesco°s world heritage list.
